Welcome to Formaria

Sam Middleton is an English author of science fiction and fantasy, best known for his ongoing grimdark series A Tale of The Fromryr. His work blends cinematic science-fantasy with ancient magi-tech, political intrigue, and eldritch forces simmering beneath the fractured world of Aetraya.

A graduate of the University of Sheffield with a BA in English Literature, Sam built his career as a professional content writer and ghostwriter before turning his focus to fiction. Now working freelance, he spends only a fraction of the year in the UK, often vanishing abroad for months at a time—usually somewhere warm, usually with a stack of notes, and usually to hammer out the next chapter of his sprawling saga.

Discover the World of Aetraya

Formaria

Deep beneath the poisoned forest of Yeggardania lies Formaria, a vast sub-continental realm of stone and shadow.

Its endless tunnels, vaults, and shimmering caverns shelter the Fromryr, an alliance of elves, dwarves, gnomes, and humans who survive by mastering the forgotten technologies of the long-vanished Formarians.

In this hidden world of ancient alloys and magical ice, the Fromryr fight to preserve what remains of their civilisation far below the ruined earth above.
Ravinica

South of Formaria’s borders stretches Ravinica, a human kingdom of sweeping plains, jagged mountain chains, fertile fields, and twin coastlines shaped by bountiful rivers.

Prosperous in harvests, trade, and military power, Ravinica should be a unified force, yet political turmoil in the capital of Vallorandyl has fractured its stability.

Prince Eluthienn, once heir to the throne, has been exiled under mysterious charges and has since vanished, leaving a kingdom struggling to contain unrest.
Fiondagaard

To the east lies Fiondagaard, Ravinica’s ancient foe, a stern human kingdom carved from marshlands, stone-hard soil, and freezing mountain passes.

Its people are forged by scarcity and survival, ruled with iron severity by an undying emperor whose greatest terror is sorcery that might eclipse his own power.

In this land of cold winds and harsher laws, strength is the only currency, and rebellion rarely survives the winter.
